Character Information
Name: Itona Horibe
Fandom: Assassination Classroom
Canonpoint: Chapter 141
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Physical Description: In his canon, Itona underwent a change and he doesn't look like at the beginning of the series. Sadly, I can't provide colored images of his current appearance as anime hasn't covered that part yet, however, here's an image from the manga. As for his hair/eye color, I'll be using the palette from the anime adaptation while his bandana would be yellow.
History:
(Note: There will be lots of names appearing throughout this section and it would turn out to be a real mess if I explained who everyone are, so I just let myself include the links to Assassination Classroom wiki for the most important characters. Itona has his own entry, but it seems to be lacking some vital information, especially from the later chapters. Naturally, there will be spoilers.)
Assassination Classroom's plot revolves around the students who belong to the 3-E class of Kunugigaoka Junior High School — prestigious school with an original educational system created by the board chairman, Gakuhō Asano. All students at Kunugigaoka are assigned to different classes from A to E, depending on their test results. The students with the best grades are gathered in the A class while the students with the worst results or those who broke the school rules end up in the E class, also known as END class. The students of the 3-E class have to put up with other classes bullying and mocking since they feel superior in comparison to these outcasts. Their classroom isn't even located in the school's main campus, but rather in a wreck of a building in the mountains, a few kilometers away. However, they have to attend all of the school assemblies, during which they're being mocked and shown as the school's black sheeps. Although, with the arrival of Korosensei, a giant yellow octopus with bizarre powers who insists on becoming their homeroom teacher, everything slowly begins to change. After his sudden appearance at Kunugigaoka, the students are also given a special task — Japanese Ministry of Defense assigns them to kill their homeroom teacher, who plans to destroy the Earth in March of the next year. After a successful assassination, they would receive a ten billion yen reward from the Ministry. They also send in one of their agents, Karasuma, who is in charge of Physical Education and supervises Korosensei.
And then, Korosensei's assassination classroom begins...
Itona happens to be the second transfer student to the infamous 3-E Class, whose mission is to assassinate Korosensei. The original plan assumed that the first transfer student, Ritsu and Itona would work together in order to kill their target. Apparently, he didn't seem ready by the time and Ritsu was send in first. On his first day in Kunugigaoka Junior High School, Itona makes sure that his entrance would be memorable for his new classmates and his assassination target — after being introduced to everyone by Shiro, his self-proclaimed guardian, he just destroys one of the classroom's walls, casually walks in and takes his seat. It wasn't that hard, by the way, since the school building in which they had classes is, frankly speaking, more of a hovel than a school facility — that is the most that students of the worst class in the whole school could get. He wanted to point out that he's the strongest and that no one could possibly beat him. His attitude makes the rest of the group label him as a troublesome and weird, but Itona doesn't seem to care. His only intention is to kill those who might be stronger than him, and there's no one who's stronger than the homeroom teacher. For no other reason than to intimidate Korosensei, Itona approaches him, challenges him to a match and calls him his brother, leaving the rest of the class and Korosensei himself in deep shock.
As the time passes, the similarities between the both of them start to show — their sweet tooth or their liking for busty chests, for example. The students of the 3-E class begin to think how is that even possible that these two are brothers, but in the end they don't come up with a logical answer. When the time for the match comes, it is revealed that Itona and his guardian prepared themselves quite well by studying Korosensei's weak points. However, it still wasn't enough to defeat him. At first, it seems like Itona is going to win the match, especially after he exposes the tentacles in his hair. Thanks to them, Itona manages to drive Korosensei into a corner quite fast as the rest of the class watches the match, bewildered of what they're seeing. In the end, Korosensei manages to see through Shiro's scheme, which was simply to weaken him and then finish him off, and wins the match, taking advantage of the fact that his and Itona's weaknesses are mostly the same. The loss makes Itona go berserk, and Korosensei's invitation to come and study with everyone in the 3-E class doesn't help much. Then, Itona charges at his opponent, but Shiro, aware of the fact that they can't win this time, stuns the boy and backs down, carrying him on his shoulder.
After the match, Itona takes absence for quite some time, but when his guardian comes up with another plan, the two of them return to Kunugigaoka in order to get their revenge. This time making use of one of the students, Terasaka, they set up a trap for Korosensei. As the phrase "the ends justifies the means" is well known to Shiro, he doesn't hesitate to put the 3-E class's students in danger just to walk out victorious. Without any objections, Itona follows him as he hopes that this time he'll finally get to kill Korosensei and prove himself. Previously mentioned Terasaka, doesn't feel comfortable with their extraordinary homeroom teacher being around, because, to put it simply, he ruins Terasaka's world, little by little. Terasaka doesn't want class 3-E to change as he would rather stay an outcast, and with Korosensei teaching them, the worst class in the whole school is slowly becoming the best one. Besides, his friends began to spend more time with Korosensei recently, even though Terasaka, as the leader of their group, forbid them to do so. Shiro takes advantage of Terasaka's anger and manipulates him to lure Korosensei and his classmates to the swimming pool next afternoon. Because the boy had weakened Korosensei the day before by spreading a chemical gas in the classroom, the assassination should be fairly easy. During one of their secret meetings, Terasaka notices the change in Itona's appearance, mostly his hair, which indicates that his tentacles have evolved. Shiro tells him that Itona needs special treatment but doesn't really explain what kind of treatment it is. Not that Terasaka is really interested in that, too.
The next day after school, Terasaka orders his classmates to come to the swimming pool because he claims to have a plan to assassinate Korosensei there. That's because, the students recently learned that if they pour water on Korosensei, his movements will slow down a great deal and they will be able to stab him. Shiro told Terasaka before, that on his signal, Itona will jump out from the bushes and kick Korosensei into the water. That was a lie, though — from the very beginning Shiro intended to put the students in danger and make Korosensei both rescue them and fight Itona at the same time. So when Terasaka pulls the trigger of his gun (the shot supposed to be the signal for Itona to charge), Korosensei still stands there, but the dam blocking the pool explodes. Nobody kicked him into the water, but still, Korosensei is forced to jump into the water without Itona's little help if he doesn't want the students to drown. To make things worse, the natural swimming pool was made near a steep, rocky area and the now destroyed dam was the only thing which divided the pool from it. Because of the gas that Terasaka spread, Korosensei can't protect himself from water anymore, too. The situations seems dire, but one of the students, Karma, known of skipping classes every so often (and that's the reason he has no idea about Terasaka's plan), notices that something happened at the pool, where he finds dumbfounded Terasaka. While they try to think about how to help their classmates, Itona engages into a battle with Korosensei. It is shown that Itona has two tentacles now instead of multiple ones, and they're far stronger and faster. When the fight reaches it climax, Terasaka steps in and challenges Itona to fight, one on one. He has no chances against Itona, but he has an ace under his sleeve...literally. Since he's wearing the same shirt as the day before, Karma takes advantage of the fact a little amount of the chemical remains on the fabric. That and splashing water on Itona is enough to stop the boy. Itona, with his tentacles soaking wet, has to withdraw again. Korosensei is persistent and invites him to come to the class once more, but Itona's not interested.
The Shiro and Itona duo stay away from Korosensei and his class for a long time after that incident, but they appear again, when Korosensei is accused of stealing women's underwear and the students want to check if he's really the culprit and catch the thief red-handed. In the end, it turns out that Korosensei is innocent and everything was just a part of Shiro's new plan. The impostor, who happens to be one of the workers of Ministry of Defense (and is working under Shiro), lures Korosensei into a trap made of Anti-Sensei Sheets (in general, all Anti-Sensei materials, equipment etc., are the only weapons that work against Korosensei, as the standard ones are of no use) which prevents him from escape. Itona appears on the top of the bizarre cage, ready to attack from above. This plan seems perfect to Shiro, and to increase his chances, before the fight he equipped Itona's tentacles with gloves with blades made of the Anti-Sensei Material. Such equipment mixed with a continuous attack will sooner or later hurt Korosensei, and Shiro is aware of that. Itona's pretty sure that this will be his win at last, but once more Korosensei shows his extraordinary powers which seem to grow even stronger over the course of time. After seeing through Itona's attack pattern, Korosensei finally counters and knocks Itona out after unleashing his new power. This time, after another loss, Korosensei doesn't want to hand Itona down to Shiro and insists on him to join the class.
However, Shiro has no interest in Itona anymore, not after so many failures. Moreover, the tentacles seem to be trying to take over Itona and eat his mind away because of the shock of his constant losses. Shiro reveals that the maintenance of his tentacles is quite expensive and involves the energy of three thermal power plants to keep them going for a month. So, when he realizes this is Itona's limit, he leaves him be, even though Itona seems to be in enormous pain. Abandoned boy, being tortured by a rejection response from the tentacles, goes berserk and destroys different cell phones stores all around the city. When the damages are shown in the news, the students immediately realize who's the culprit. Korosensei decides to help Itona, but at the same time, Shiro is ordered by his supervisors to take care of this problem.
Shortly, Itona is found by Korosensei and his students just after he smashes up another cell phones store. This time Korosensei clearly states that he wants to take him in. Still, Itona doesn't want to go with them. Instead, he asks Korosensei to spar with him one more time, and Korosensei isn't really against it; his only condition is that they have to move somewhere else and that after the fight Itona agrees to join the class. However, their conversation is interrupted by an explosion. Apparently, it was all Shiro's doing. He detonated a bomb full of Anti-Sensei Powder which weakened both Korosensei and Itona. To put it simply, his plan is to make use of Itona one more time — Shiro traps him in a net made of Anti-Sensei Fibers and kidnaps the boy in order to make Korosensei pursue him. Korosensei, who deeply cares about his students, falls right into Shiro's trap, just as planned. Shiro throws away the net with motionless Itona inside and waits for Korosensei to approach the boy. Then, the homeroom teacher realizes that he's actually surrounded by a group of snipers, who, in fact, doesn't aim their guns at him, but at Itona. While being defended by Korosensei who is repelling the bullets, Itona realizes that he's actually powerless, even though Shiro implanted the tentacle cells within him and helped him to tame this new power. When he starts to think that he's really done for now, the students of the 3-E class come to the rescue and knock down the snipers to get their revenge on Shiro, who put them in danger last time. With no snipers and no contingency plan, Shiro makes his escape, leaving the boy behind for good.
Itona, almost sure that he's on the verge of death, reminisces his past — different images appear inside of his head, and all of them show him as a powerless kid, abandoned even by his own parents. Those cells are slowly taking over the body as they need the energy; that's why Shiro needed three thermal power plants to maintain Itona's tentacles. However, if the energy isn't provided from the outside, the tentacles start to feed on their host's energy and reduce their human abilities. What is more, the tentacles most probably possess an intelligence of their own — one time, Itona recalls that they asked him: "What do you want to become?" and because his answer was "I want to be strong.", it determined all of Itona's priorities; he simply couldn't think of anything else than winning.
While Itona lays down motionlessly, the group of students watches him, wondering how could they help. There is only one way — he must get rid of his tenacity for power and victory, otherwise the tentacles can't be detached. The students have no idea how to do it, though. They don't even know Itona that well, and they doubt that the boy would tell them anything about his past. The only thing that they manage to find out is that Itona is the son of Horibe Electronics Factory president, who disappeared along with his wife after the company went bankrupt. The lack of information on Itona doesn't discourage Terasaka who Itona met before and who decides that he and his group will take care of Itona and try to squeeze out the information from him.
There's a flashback that shows how much his father valued hard work and how he believed in it. He founded an electronic parts factory with a strong conviction — even though they were a small one, their technology was special. So, naturally, if they continued to work earnestly, no other company, even a large one, could compete against them. Soon enough, Itona's father learned that they couldn't go like that anymore because the company workers were offered the sums of money that Horibe Electronics Factory could never offer. After witnessing the company workers quit, Itona realized that knowledge and earnestness aren't that important, especially if money or power are involved. He wanted to obtain such influential power after his parents left him at his uncle's house and ran away. That was the time when Shiro found Itona, sitting alone in a dark alley and offered to implant the tentacle cells within him. He just couldn't bring himself to not accept such generous offer.
With a bandana remade from the Anti-Sensei Net, now wrapped around his head, Itona walks around the city with Terasaka, who admits straightforwardly that he has absolutely no plan how to help him. Korosensei is well aware of that they have to change his way of thinking, especially about power, but he lets his students handle Itona by themselves. They visit various places run by the parents of the students like a ramen restaurant or a bike shop. That helps Itona relax a bit, but he still doesn't want to let go of his desire for power, which makes him put up a fight with Terasaka. He tells Itona that there's no need to sulk just because he lost once or twice because it will be fine if he just wins some day. In the meantime, he can just goof around with the rest of the class. Terasaka's talk gets to Itona, who finally decides to discard the power he gained by the implementation of the tentacles and joins the 3-E class.
On his first day at school after the removal of the tentacles, Itona is finally able to show off his engineering skills and in no time his vehicles become a great asset. It seems that due to the tentacles, all of his skills were suppressed, because he gets fairly good grades when tested by Korosensei. In no time Itona creates a radio controlled combat vehicle, which supposed to be used to assassinate Korosensei but in the end...the boy's from the class persuade him to make the vehicle spy on girls when they saw Itona doing a test drive. Since the vehicle was equipped with a camera, so after improving it a little they could...spy on girls even more efficiently if you know what I mean. Thankfully for the girls, the vehicle gets smashed up by a weasel that lives in the nearby river. Although, this weird team up shows that Itona can actually cooperate with others, even though he's a sharp-tongued boy.
In the next chapters, Itona is more of a supportive character. During the school's athletic festival, which is basically a sports competition between the 3-E and 3-A classes, Itona becomes the secret weapon of the END class — thanks to his exceptional physical strength, he manages to turn the tables during the boutatoshi competition (it's a game in which the object is to topple the opposing team's pole) by jumping up six foot high and making the 3-A class's pole fall down.
After an incident involving some of the students from the class in which a kindergarten caretaker was injured, they are ordered by Korosensei to work at the said kindergarten for a week, until the caretaker will be discharged from the hospital. The class not only takes care of the children there (they're quite good at it, by the way), but they also helps with modernization of the old building, and Itona has his part in it. He constructs an indoor playground for children and, along with Yoshida, he repairs the caretaker's beloved bike.
During the God of Death Arc, Irina who is Class's 3-E English teacher and a skilled assassin as well, gets kidnapped by the worldwide famous assassin known as the God of Death. The assassin forbids the students to tell Korosensei or Karasuma about what happened and makes them come to an appointed place, which is an abandoneddefinitely not suspicious building. They get inside and decide to divide into teams, so they could search for their teacher more efficiently. However, the God of Death doesn't let them have their way so easily. Each and every one of the students made a great progress, but they're still no match for the master assassin, who slowly takes each team down. Itona, the member of the team C, is mostly in charge of providing support with his radio controlled vehicles that scout the area, but they also get attacked by the master assassin. Surprisingly, Itona doesn't want to fight, but surrenders straight away, as he's aware that they're no match for a killer with such skills, but he's sure that Korosensei will come and rescue them. And he's not wrong at all.
During the Kunugigaoka school festival, class 3-E decides to do a food stand and sell noodles made from acorns. Again, it's a competition between classes 3-A and 3-E. However bizarre it may sound, they have many clients. Itona's role is the same as previously — he uses his vehicles to scout the mountain area in search for ingredients essential for their unusual noodles.
The latest chapters reveal that Kayano also had tentacle cells implanted and finally shows her true colors. At that time, Itona becomes sort of an expert since he has been through the same. His experience helps greatly to rescue her, even though he doesn't take action himself. After the conflict is solved, Korosensei tells his students about his past since it involves Kayano as well. Korosensei's story makes all of them doubt if they are really able to kill their homeroom teacher, especially after making so many memories with him.
They still have 66 days until March, and they have to find out what their answer is by then.

The assassin forbids the students to tell Korosensei or Karasuma about what happened and makes them come to an appointed place, which is an abandoned

Personality:
Since his childhood, Itona seems to be greatly influenced by his father, the president of Horibe Electronics Factory. Itona would spend lots of his free time there, watching his father and the other workers developing technologies that big companies strive for. Eventually, he gets into engineering and electronics himself and comes to the factory not just to watch, but also to polish his skills under the watchful eye of his father who taught him everything. Itona's father always emphasized the significance of earnestness and hard work; even Itona's name can be a proof of that since one of the signs his parents chose has a meaning of "to grow".
These values had a major impact on Itona, even though he isn't always aware of that fact. His tenacity which seems to be a fruit of his father instilling the importance of hard work into his mind can be seen not only after the removal of the tentacles, but also while he still had them. There is one exception, though. He shows no sign of the same tenacity when it comes to things that don't interest him, mostly school subjects (especially social studies).
First of all, he may have obtained this bizarre power the "easy way", but how he acted after laying his hands on it is another thing. To reach his goal, he even allowed Shiro to alter his body multiple times. One could say that it's a rather unique proof of his hard work.
Moreover, his fixation on the concepts of power and victory were food for his tenacity — after seeing his parents' failure, naturally he began to doubt the values about which they were particular about. Their factory going bankrupt because of the bigger companies offering their employees higher salaries was the best proof that hard-workers won't get anywhere unless they are influential or have money. So Itona decided to take on Shiro's offer, as he could get not only power and victory, but also the ten billion yen reward for assassinating Korosensei which could greatly help with repurchasing his parents' factory.
After Korosensei helped Itona out to get rid of the tentacles, his tenacity remains unchanged. After the removal, he indeed has to put more work into the assassinations if he wants to succeed, because he has to lean on his own skills rather than someone else's power. That makes him reconsider his father's words, which he finds out to be true, but his classmates show him that it's really important to take things slow sometimes.
Those classmates would be mainly Terasaka, Muramatsu, Yoshida, and Hazama. They all belong to one group while Terasaka is their leader. They're all known for their independent approach and the reputation of troublemakers. When Itona's condition gets serious and the tentacles are about to eat his mind away, they decide to butt in and help him rather than leave him alone to die, just like Shiro did. Since they have no better ideas what to do with Itona, they just show him around. For example, Muramatsu invites them all to the ramen shop owned by his family. Itona tastes the noodles and almost pukes, they're just that bad. Later, Yoshida takes the group to the bike shop run by parents and shows Itona one of their bikes so he could chill out a little. Hazama recommends him to read a The Count of Monte Cristo so he could feed his anger and darkness inside of him as he must be pretty pissed off after being abandoned by Shiro. When Itona begins to lose control over the tentacles, Terasaka doesn't give up on him and reveals the reason why they showed him all those places. It was simply to show him that as long as he succeeds someday, everything will be fine — there's no need to rush things and there's definitely nothing wrong in losing once or twice, as long as he doesn't stray from the path. The ramen at Muramatsu's place may be inedible, but when he takes over the shop someday, he'll change the recipe and make the ramen shop successful.
This message helped Itona a great deal and made him open up a little, because of all the hardships he had to face in his past, he's rather isolated and quiet. The bullying with which he had to cope with at his previous school didn't make things any easier for him; the kids decided to pick up on him because he's of a fragile built and because of the fact that Itona's parents abandoned him after the factory his family owned went bankrupt (which they somehow learned). He usually speaks up only when prompted, but even then he's not all that talkative. Although, it changes a bit after Terasaka's intervention — after joining the class Itona is more willing to cooperate and to interact with others, as it is shown when he builds a radio controlled vehicle that could scout the area. Interested by what he has been doing, some boys approach him, offering their help. They end up working together and having fun, even though the vehicle gets destroyed.
However, when he decides to speak his mind (which happens rarely, but still), he comes out to be a rather sharp-tongued boy. Especially towards the people he's close with, meaning the members of Terasaka's group; Itona never ceases to call Terasaka an idiot when he does something stupid or criticize the ramen at Muramatsu's place (he still eats it, though). Yoshida and Hazama don't have it that hard, though. Yoshida and Itona share a hobby; they even worked together when the caretaker, who was injured in the accident that involved class 3-E students ordered them to work at his kindergarten — They were in charge of making an indoor playground and repairing caretaker's bike. On the other hand, Hazama is kind of indifferent to everyone and doesn't get in anybody's way as she prefers to read books than to socialize with others.
All in all, Itona's role is more of a supporter and while he doesn't play the first strings in the class, he doesn't mind it at all — in that sense he fits in Terasaka's group quite well, because he has a different approach just like them. While quietly working in the background, he doesn't forget about his goal even for a short while and keeps providing electronics support to his classmates.

Like father, like son they say and this is the case this time, too. Itona's father owned an electronic parts factory, but he wasn't just an entrepreneur — he loved to tinker with all kind of things as well. Itona looks up to his father even after he abandoned him and the soldering iron he received from his father is Itona's most prized possession is the best proof of that. Usually, Itona's creations are radio controlled vehicles, used mainly to scout the area (Itona I and Itona III are great examples) during all kinds of missions or events.
Along with tentacles, Itona received a boost in his physical strength as well. After Korosensei removed them from his body, Itona keeps his physical capabilities at a high level. The best example is his high jump during the athletic festival, when he jumps up six foot high, even though it's impossible for a boy of his age to do that. However, at some point Korosensei gives him a warning that this strength may fade someday and he shouldn't rely on it too much.

[After the discovery of the flip phone left in the locker with his name on it, Itona can't just stop messing around with it. This is his jam after all.]
Seriously, did we get back to the 90s? [He flips the phone open and examines the screen. That brings a few memories back.] I read somewhere that they're getting popular again, but... [The flip cover close with a click after he presses his fingers against it. Time to take a closer look at the casing. If he only had his tools with him...They're nowhere to be found, though.] Could be better, but it's not that bad of a phone, I guess.
[Once again he opens the flip cover with a swift move of his fingers, this time to look what can he actually do with the phone. His eyes sparkle a little when he notices the games section.]
What do we have there...Tetris, Snake...let's see.
[He decides to go with Tetris this time...but wait. Why the blocks are falling down so fast? Last time he played it was nothing like that. Then he notices the ridiculously high level.]
What is this, a bug? [The question remains unanswered, but soon after he notices someone approaching.] Hey, you. Do you have a phone like this? Let me see it.
Third Person Sample:
The stuffy classroom and an incredibly boring lecture made Itona drowsy. Trying to vanquish the sleep from his eyelids, he waited impatiently for the lesson to end, only the thought of the food he'll get to eat soon kept him fairly conscious. Everything seemed much more interesting to him than the subject of the lesson, even that one particular spot on his desk. Why did he even come here in the first place? Next time he's just going to find himself a cozy hideout where he could wait for the lunch break.
"Ugh, social studies. Who needs that anyway..." The thought continued to reappear as the teacher explained things he didn't care about at all.
But now he had to put up with the monotonous voice of the teacher. Who would have thought that he'll miss Korosensei's classes? The bizarre homeroom teacher from his previous school might have been annoying, especially during individual teaching sessions, but at least Itona wasn't as bored as he was now.
"Oh great, we're getting an insight in economics now? Like I don't know how this crap works." Itona rolled his eyes, forced to listen about the rapid economic growth a few decades ago, even though he didn't feel like it.
The hands of the clock were moving mercilessly slow and made him think that the battery might be running out. During the last ten minutes before the lunch break, he just stared at that one point on his desk as he pretended to be taking notes. But finally, his wish was granted and the lesson was over. The students already began heading out to the cafeteria, so it was a good idea to get moving too if he didn't want to stand in line for most of the break.
Even though he tried his best to actually not notice, but it was clear that the other students already formed into smaller groups and tried to stick together. Befriending people, he never was good at it and it didn't seem to change anytime soon.
"I'll worry about that later, food first." He muttered to himself when a few of his classmates passed him. Besides, his stomach began to remind him in a series of low growls, that he needed lunch as soon as possible.
